Recommend me 8-channel ADAT A/D converter
January 07, 2018, 11:32:29 PM
My aged workhorse, 16 channel Apogee AD16x exploded when powering it on after my 10 day new year vacation. I can arrange 8 channels from my spare unit but I still need 8 high quality A/D converters.

  • 44.1k and 48k sample rates are enough.
  • No need for MIDI control.
  • No need for USB interface.
  • No need for preamps.
  • As transparent as possible.
  • Word clock output would be a big plus.
  • Sub-D25 connector would be very nice.
  • To be used to convert drum overheads, drum room mics and lead vocal. Signal coming from my boutique preamps that have Lundahl LL 5402 output transformers.
Durability: minimum 10 years.

My previous experiences about durability:
- Behringer ADA8000: PSU capacitor exploded after just 3 years. Price is ridiculous (about $250) but it's not durable. Sound is not hi-fi enough for the critical tracks but it was totally ok for drum triggers and talkback.
- Presonus Digimax FS: D/A converters went silent after 4 years. A/D sound quality: pretty neutral but does not amaze me.
- RME Fireface: PSU exploded (capacitor again) after 10 years of daily use. Repair cost was $300 ... 400. A/D quality: 8/10.
- Apogee: 12 years before meltdown. A/D quality: 8+/10.

New unit's price should be max $2500.

What unit would you recommend? I found these but none of them is perfect match...
